To the Lake: A Celebration of Calm, Connection, and Local Waters

View of the North Carolina beach that we visited with my nephew and niece

Some adventures take months to plan. Others start with a packed bag, a few snacks, and a spontaneous trip to the nearest lake. This week's Summer Bucket List theme, To the Lake, is about embracing water in all its forms - beaches, rivers, creeks, or splash pads. No matter the destination, the memories are made in the moments, not the mileage.

You don't need a seaside resort or a passport to feel the magic of water. A quiet lake with a sandy shore can feel just as dreamy as an ocean view. And littles? They don't know the difference. A splash, a float, a snack by the shoreline - it all feels like magic to them.

We believe local adventures can be just as meaningful as big ones. Staycations are powerful. Day trips are enough. In fact, they're often better: less stress, less cost, and more presence.

Water has a way of soothing the senses. It slows us down. It connects us to nature, to our littles, and to ourselves. You don't need a full day at the lake to enjoy its beauty. Even an hour can reset your rhythm.

Here are a few ideas to help your lake (or any body of water) visit feel simple, intentional, and full of joy.

No-Fuss Ways to Make the Most of the Day

  • Pack a picnic: fruit, sandwiches, juice boxes - keep things easy and familiar.
  • Bring a few sand toys or cups for scooping and pouring.
  • Don't foget sun hats and towels, even if you're just there to wade.
  • Let your littles lead: chase minnows, watch clouds, or bury your feet in the sand together.

Impactful, Low-Effort Activities to Try by the Water:

HEAR

Activity: Close your eyes and count five different sounds. Birds, waves, laughter, wind...

Why it matters: Focusing on natural sounds invites calm and helps anchor you in the movement.

FEEL

Activity: Dig your toes into the sand or dip your fingers in the water. Ask your little one how it feels.

Why it matters: Tactile experiences strengthen sensory awareness and create grounded connection.

SEE

Actvitiy: Look around and describe what you see using only colors. "I see green trees, white clouds, blue boats..."

Why it matters: Encourages observational skills and mindful presence without overcomplicating the moment.

SMELL

Activity: Breathe deeply and name any scents you notice - fresh air, sunscreen, grass.

Why it matters: Sensory labeling builds emotional regulation and encourages self-awareness.

TASTE

Activity: Choose a simple treat to enjoy intentionally: watermelon slices, a popsicle, a lemonade.

Why it matters: Mindful eating is a great way to model presence and enjoyment without distraction.

When you get home, toss the wet swimsuits in the wash and smile at the sand still stuck between your toes. It means you said yes to the moment.
